It was completely unexpected - the power going out in our neighborhood on a sunny Sunday afternoon!! And it happened just yesterday (August 16th). We still don't know exactly what the problem was, but the power was out in our house and our neighborhood for about 4 hours. This is NOT the best scenario in August in humid, central Arkansas.
One of the most interesting things I observed was our kids --- what do kids do when there is no Wii to play on, no radio to listen to, and no air conditioning in the house? Answer: they learn to be creative!!
Our kids played outside, played board games, and found other ways to entertain themselves in the midst of the power outage. It was fun to see. It reminded Shawn and I of how we had fun as kids before the advent of all the electronic gadgets that kids now have to amuse themselves.
But it also reminded me of an important truth about walking with Christ. We, as His followers, can DO NOTHING without His Power working in our lives. Just as when the power is off in our homes, we are severely limited in what we can do, we are also capable of doing nothing of eternal value without the Holy Spirit working in our lives.
For several years, after becoming a follower of Christ, I did not understand the role of the Holy Spirit and how to walk in His Power day-by-day. I first really understood this when I read a small booklet from Campus Crusade for Christ entitled "The Spirit-Filled Life". You can find out more by going to this link: http://www.jesuswho.org/english/spirit.htm
Understanding and applying the truths about the Holy Spirit can dramatically change your daily walk with Jesus. Shawn and I pray that we, as the followers of Jesus, will learn to walk daily in the power of the Holy Spirit!! Don't start your day without HIS power!!
