Real Biblical Help for Blended Families

Blended Families.  Everyone knows one or more.  Shawn and I have the privilege of knowing many.  We see the struggles they face with all the myriad of issues that face their families in a way that "traditional families" never experience.  Many of them are DISCOURAGED because they don't know where to turn for help.

But God is in the business of transforming lives and relationships - and He is doing a powerful work in Blended Families through Ron Deal and our Blended Family Ministry.  Ron formally joined FamilyLife a couple of years ago and he has been teaching us, as a staff so much about the challenges of blended families.

But we, as a staff, cannot reach every blended family. That is where YOU come in the picture!!

CHALLENGE:  Make a point to call or contact a blended family you know today or -- at the least -- later this week.  Share the website link below with them and tell them that you know there are articles, videos, resources, etc. that are SPECIALLY DESIGNED for their needs.  Ask them if there is a way you can pray for them and then call them back in a week or so to follow-up.  You can be used by God in this small way to encourage a struggling family or just help a family who is doing well to keep the course and continue trusting God in the good and not-so-good times.

Thanks for taking this small but important step to encourage a blended family TODAY!

Celebrating 10 years with FamilyLife!!! Rejoice with us!!

August 25th 2013!!  Yesterday, Shawn and I celebrated 10 years of being on staff with FamilyLife in Little Rock!  August 25, 2003 was our "report date" to FamilyLife Headquarters in Little Rock.  We can hardly believe that it has actually been 10 years since we packed up our family and our U-Haul in Houston, (sort of like the Beverly Hillbillies) and set our course for the next chapter in our lives in Arkansas.

And it has been a great 10 years -- and at the same time a challenging 10 years.  We have had some awesome highs in our ministry and family and some discouraging lows in both as well.  But the ONE CONSTANT has been the Lord God's Faithful Love, Care, and Provision for us.  Thank You, Lord, for Your Great Faithfulness to us!!!

And we would like to thank our MINISTRY PARTNER TEAM as well.  The 120+ families and individuals who support us make up our Ministry Partner Team.  Without their financial support and their prayers, we would not be serving with FamilyLife.  So THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!

Shawn and I look forward to the years ahead as God continues to faithfully provide for our every need.  We believe wholeheartedly what our FamilyLife President Dennis Rainey has said on many occasions:  "Our best years are still ahead of us"!

End of Our Sabbatical --- Thanks for Your Prayers for Us!!

Shawn and I would like to thank you all so much for PRAYING FOR US during out time off this summer for our Sabbatical.    We were asking you to pray for 3 things as we asked God for those as well—and He was faithful as He always is!  1) We did have some great uninterrupted times with Him during out time off.  2) We also felt we were truly able to let go or the ministry side of things for this time—although we did have to do some “ministry stuff” along the way, it was a joy and not a burden.  And 3) we were able, by God’s grace, to make some good memories together as a family.  It was a VERY RELAXED time away!!  We thank God for providing this needed time of rest!!

Update on our Sabbatical AND Great Weather in Arkansas!!

Just wanted to take a minute to "brag on God" for a minute or two!!  He is an awesome God and, in His Great Grace and Goodness, shows us tangible means of His Care every day.  Here are just two of them!

OUR SABBATICAL:  Shawn and I have really been enjoying our Sabbatical this month - this is the 2nd one we have taken in our 10 years on staff.  We were able to start our sabbatical when our Cru/Campus Crusade Staff Conference ended in Colorado on June 21st.  So we have had about two weeks of extended time off and have about 10 days left!  When people ask me what we have been doing, my normal response is "as little as possible"!  For me (Glen), that is challenging because I am a natural "doer" - always something to do next of my to do list.  But I have been fighting the urge "to do" and really just enjoying some extended times with the Lord, some time to read some great books, time to enjoy the kids, and, last but certainly not least, time to talk and have fun with Shawn.  It has been sweet.  I am reminded how much God designed us for REST!  And we ALL need this in our very busy lives!

GREAT AUGUST WEATHER:  As I looked at the weather forecast this week, I was dumbfounded.  This is mid-August in Arkansas.  We are usually sweltering with 90+ degree temps and high humidity to boot.  But, in God's Goodness, this week is different.  High today and tomorrow are 81 degrees - and the Lows both nights at 57 degrees!  Unheard of!!  Thanks be to God for His Respite from the normal summer heat.  See screenshot below from weather.com.  Thank You Lord!!

Was Jonah a "Racist"? Read more in this post.

Reading through the book of Jonah in the last week or so.  Came across this "extra thought" in the our Discover God Study Bible.  Had never really thought of Jonah as a "racist" - but it does make a lot of sense in the way Jonah reacted to God's command to go to Nineveh and even in his response when God chose NOT to destroy Nineveh.  Lord, please help each of us to examine our hearts to see if there is any offensive or racist way in us....and then, by Your Grace, remove that from our hearts and attitudes.  Thank You Lord for Your Message to us through the Book of Jonah!

Reaching Out to Everyone:  Jonah

Almost everyone knows the story of Jonah – how a big fish swallowed the prophet and after three days spit him out onto dry land.  Many also know that this happened because Jonah was running away from God.

But fewer know why Jonah fled God’s call to go to Nineveh, one of the most important cities in Assyria, and tell people there to repent (Jonah 1:2).  He didn't run away because he felt inadequate to be a missionary or because he was afraid of leaving his home.  Jonah resisted God’s call because he was a racist – he wanted all of the Assyrians to die and suffer eternal punishment with no opportunity to hear the Good News of a Sovereign, Merciful God (Jonah 4:2).  His prejudice sent him on a foolish game of hide-and-seek from the Almighty God – and you can guess who won.

It is true that the Assyrian Empire was an aggressive and oppressive political regime.  It is true that their people had different cultural and moral standards.  Their generals were guilty of some of the most heinous war atrocities that can be imagined.  But with all that being true, God still had a plan to offer them the opportunity to repent – no society is too degraded to be redeemed by God.  No sinner is too bad to be made good by God’s Grace.

Racism is unbiblical for two reasons.  First, we all come from the same parents – Adam and Eve – who were made in God’s image (Genesis 1:25-26).   As God’s image-bearers, all people are worthy of our respect.  Second, racism is forbidden because, in Christ, God has destroyed the barriers that divide races (Ephesians 2:14).  We must share the Gospel with people from every tribe and nation because God’s goal is to create a body of worshipers from all over the world (Revelation 7:9-10).  Racism has no place in the hearts of those who love the Gospel and believe in God’s worldwide vision for His Church.

Duck Dynasty: Foundation in Christ for Their Marriage

I am not a big fan of Duck Dynasty but have watched a few episodes now and then with my wife.  When Shawn brought this video to my attention, however, my "fan status" for them went up!  Check out the video and thank God that some of the cast of Duck Dynasty, at least, are using the platform God has given them to give Glory to the Jesus!

Trusting God: The Proof is in the Pudding

Read the following in the Discover God Study Bible (written by Bright Media - legacy of Bill Bright) and thought it was too good NOT TO SHARE.  May the Lord speak to you as He encourages and challenges you through these thoughts:

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating." What does that English proverb from the 1300's mean? It announces that the best test of whether a dish is done properly is in the tasting of the food.

This proverb is rarely truer than when applied to trusting God. We can read about faith, and still remain faithless. We can pray for more faith, but still not trust God anymore than before we prayed. It is in the act of  trusting God, relying on God and keeping His covenant with us through Christ, that we discover that God is able to guide us. It is by faith in God and renouncing confidence in our own sinful strategies that we discover God's wise plans for our life.

As with faith, we do not experience God's direction by passively waiting for His will to be revealed to us. It is by actively seeking God's will that we experience the joy of walking in His way. As the Psalmist says, "Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!"  Psalm 34:8

Half a Century!! Can it be?? Glen celebrates his 50th birthday!

Half a century!  That sound SO OLD!!!  Well whether it sounds old or not, the reality is that I (Glen) celebrated my 50th Birthday!  My official birthday was on July 15th but since we were in Colorado at the the Cru Staff Conference then, we decided to celebrate when we all got back to Arkansas.  So we were able to celebrate my 50th on Monday the 29th - just a couple of weeks after my "real birthday".

I also got to "order" my birthday meal - which I chose some delicious lentil soup with some great salad to boot - all made by my beautiful bride, Shawn.  Then Shawn gave me a "bonus" by making some delicious and finger-licking gluten-free chocolate muffins!  The kids would have eaten them all if we had not restrained them :)

In any case, I felt well loved as we celebrated.  I also so appreciated all the cards and phone calls I got from friends and family.  And while I don't like being the "center of attention", I do appreciate those people God has placed in my life that show love to me on my birthday!

And yes, the mail from AARP is already coming.......:)

The Solbergs at Cru Staff Conference in Colorado

Shawn and I and our oldest son, Josh, are enjoying our time here in Fort Collins, Colorado at the 2013 Cru Staff Conference.  We look forward to being here every other year to get some great training but mostly to celebrate and to see how the Lord God is working AROUND THE WORLD to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every tribe and tongue and nation!  It is exciting to see the Lord build His Church and that we have the privilege of being part of that!!

On the Road Again: Josh and Glen on the Road to Colorado

Our oldest son, Josh, and I left to drive to our Cru Staff Conference in Colorado last week.  We took about 2 and a half days to drive out from Little Rock to Fort Collins, Colorado.  We had some fun along the way but also were "road weary" at times.  We thank the Lord God for allowing us to travel almost 1,200 miles without car problems or accidents or incidents.  We thank those of you who prayed as well!

One of the highlights of our trip out was a stop in Colorado Springs!  It is so beautiful there as you look up and see the majesty of God's creation in the Rocky Mountains!  Well Josh and I decided we wanted to go to the top of Pike's Peak.  10 years ago when the whole Solberg Family was here, we rode the Pike's Peak Cog Railway to the top of the mountain - and we wanted to do that again this time.  It was a beautiful 90 minute trip to the top of the mountain and then some really incredible views from the top.  It actually rained when we are at the top but it was so cool to be above some of the clouds on top of the mountain!

Josh and Glen at the top -- 14, 100 feet!!
Josh took a bunch of pictures of the trip up.  I may post some of them later but wanted to get a couple of them on our blog.  Enjoy!

Prayer Post: July 2013

In case you haven't made this discovery yet - news flash - prayer to the Lord God of Heaven and Earth is powerful.  He commands us to pray and is literally sitting on the edge of His seat in Heaven waiting for us to ask and seek and knock.  So take advantage of this AWESOME GIFT.  Pray for the needs you have in your life and EXPECT the Lord to answer!

Below are our specific requests for this month::
  • Staff/Leadership of FamilyLife: Please pray with the leadership and staff that we would be united in God’s vision moving forward to build Godly marriages and families across the U.S. and around the world.
  • Summer Travel: Pray for the Solbergs and many of the staff as they travel to Staff Conference in Colorado and to other places to connect with their Ministry Partners.
  • New Drivers: Our oldest, Josh, now has his driver’s license and Sarah will be getting her permit this Summer. Pray for God’s protection and for wise/patient driving.
  • First Love: We would never lose our “first love” for Jesus Christ as we actively pursue our relationship with Him —and that after Him, our priorities would be Marriage 2nd, Family 3rd, and Ministry activities after that.
Thanks for praying for our family and our specific needs!!

Real Life Story: Couple married 36 years coming to a Weekend to Remember Getaway!

Shawn and I never tire of hearing the stories of marriages transformed and encouraged by our Great God!  He created marriage and He is the One who uses tools like the Weekend to Remember Getaway to mold and shape us in marriage.  Please rejoice with Shawn and I as you read the comment from this couple below.

Dear Weekend to Remember Ministry Team,

My husband and I just returned from the Family Life Weekend to Remember in Scottsdale, AZ, due to the fact that we were the winners of the grand prize weekend, from a local radio station.

I cannot begin to tell you what a difference this seminar/conference made in our lives and marriage. I have been wanting to go for years, but knew that my husband would never agree to spending the money. We have been married for 36 years, and as we do have a good marriage, it was not a great marriage. I was having some issues, but I felt like it was my own insecurities causing them. We were not Christians when we first exchanged our vows and until this weekend, I do not believe we were living a true biblical marriage. I really wanted to go and prayed for God to answer this prayer, and HE did! There were so many things He spoke to both of us about and I now truly believe we have a fresh, new start, doing it God's way and we both thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I just have to tell you I have been to many women's conferences over the years and my husband to Promise Keepers, but nothing compared to the presentation of this weekend. You all do this right. Everything from start to finish was planned out beautifully and this weekend truly ministered to hearts and especially ours. I was concerned that because we are older and empty nesters that the materials would apply more to younger married's, but nothing could be further from the truth. The speakers were excellent and they were exactly the people that needed to be at this event.

So again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us a chance to go and strengthen our marriage and give us a fresh new start. I am 58 years old and feel like a newlywed! May God continue to bless your ministry!

Response to the HISTORIC Supreme Court Ruling on Gay Marriage

As Christ-followers AND staff at FamilyLife, the Supreme Court ruling this week was a "punch to the gut" for us.  We believe that, since God created marriage, He along should be the one to define it.  Who are we, as a culture, to know better than Him.  Wherever you are in the gay marriage debate, I encourage you to listen to the FamilyLife Today Broadcast (link is below).  I also would encourage you to check out one of both of the articles links as well.  May we, as Christ-followers, be real salt and light in our country as it moves more and more away from God and Biblical truth.

Below is a brief word from  Dennis Rainey related to the FamilyLife Today broadcast that aired on Thursday June 27:

In light of the unprecedented legal decisions made today, tomorrow's normal FamilyLife Today broadcast will be preempted. Bob Lepine and I will be discussing FamilyLife's response to the Supreme Court's ruling regarding the redefinition of marriage.  What does it mean? How did this happen? How should we process this loss, and where was God in this defeat?

We may start with anger, but we must move beyond anger and sadness and back to a full confidence in the truth of the Gospel. Even though "truth has stumbled in the streets", we must not lose heart, even in the face of the loss of this skirmish. God's victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ will never be invalidated by any court of man.

Isaiah 59:15 reminds us, "Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey". Listen tomorrow as we look at this decision through the lens of God's Word.

I’d also like to ask you to pray that this message be used for good, and not for evil.

Thanks for fighting in the battle,
Dennis

20 Ways to Encourage Your Pastor - By Dennis Rainey

This is something we shared in one of our recent Ministry Minute Updates to our Ministry Partner Team.  We pray that EVERYONE who reads it will take time to do SOMETHING to encourage their Pastor!!

20 Ways to Encourage Your Pastor - by Dennis Rainey

Peter Drucker, a leading authority on management, once made a profound observation on what he believed were the four most difficult jobs in America today: The President of the United States, a university president, a hospital administrator, and a pastor of a local church.

Does this surprise you? Many people might respond, "You've got to be kidding!" A few people may even think a pastor's job is one of the easiest.

Maybe something else will surprise you—pastors may soon be an endangered species! Every year thousands of pastors are leaving the church and terminating their ministries. Exhausted and emotionally threadbare, many are leaving either because they are discouraged or because they have fallen into a baited trap of the enemy. It is a fact that there are fewer churches today than in 1900 . . . and even fewer men to lead them.

Pastor appreciation

Why is this so? Especially now? Isn't a preacher supposed to get his strokes from God and not look to receive them from men? Well, I have a hunch that the enemy of God, the devil, has created an incredible climate of skepticism and cynicism toward those who represent God. Satan is constantly hurling feelings of unappreciation at the man who has poured his life into others.

So with all the negative press printed about preachers over this past year, I have decided to use the power of the press too, and press you to some positive action for your pastor. The need for action is a 2000-year-old problem—look at what Paul writes: "But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work" (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

I want to encourage you with is a list of ways on how to appreciate and esteem your pastor.

1. Surprise him and his wife by taking them out to a nice place to eat. Talk with them about something other than your problems.

2. Schedule a Sunday (well in advance) when the laymen take the Sunday services and give him a long weekend away with his wife (Friday 'til Monday)—arrange babysitters, too.

3. Find out from his secretary what books or periodicals he's been wanting for his library; order a few and sneak them in after he's gone.

4. Over lunch, ask him how many free evenings he has each week to be with his family. If it isn't enough considering the age of his children and the needs of his wife, engage in some straight talk about the pace he keeps.

5. Perk him with a two-week study time at a seminary during early January or in the summer. No major corporation in existence spends less on the continued training, education, and care for their staff than does the church.

6. Force him and his family to take a one-month authentic sabbatical at least once every 3 years. No ministry. No giving. Just pure fun with the family, refreshing time off to read and re-vitalize his relationship with Christ.

7. Give him and his wife free sessions with a financial planning consultant, who will help him budget and anticipate college education for children and retirement.

8. Write him a hand-written note of appreciation for who he is and how God has used him in your life. Be specific; avoid broad generalizations.

9. Pray for him daily. Then call him and tell him you're doing just that and ask him for his prayer requests—pray for his wife, too.

10. Offer to meet him at his house on his day off to help fix things around the place. Some ministers are all thumbs when it comes to working with their hands ... (like me). Others are too busy to take the time!

11. Occasionally send him a clever cartoon or joke that mirrors a point he made in a sermon—just so he'll know that you're listening!

12. Do a "This is Your Life" program at church one Sunday evening—don't roast him, but refuel his spirit with testimonies and a fun time. He'll be embarrassed, but that's okay! It is biblical to receive rewards on this side of eternity (see Mark 10:28-31).

13. Find out what problem in the church that, if solved, would move the church forward in the coming year. Then, roll up your sleeves and offer to help the leadership solve it.

14. Help him get some exercise by either meeting him 3 or 4 times a week at a health club or jogging with him in the morning.

15. Clean his car while he's at the church office one day. (One of the pastors at our church even told me where he leaves his keys!)

16. Call and express appreciation to the pastor who started you on your spiritual pilgrimage, or who helped you at a critical time in your life. Be specific about how he helped you.

17. Let him know that you appreciate the load he carries: the pressure of caring for sheep, the pace of a growing ministry and the daily sacrifices he makes for ministry. Communicate that you understand he does more than just show up and preach.

18. If you're an elder or deacon, then why not schedule annual job performance evaluations, walk through his year and express appreciation for a job well done. How about a bonus if he's really been effective ... and a raise! After all, just think how much a raise encourages you.

19. Go to your pastor and ask him where you can assume a position of responsibility. As one pastor put it, "A position in the church where I can learn the fellowship of Christ's suffering—you only suffer for what you care about and you can only prove you care by taking responsibility" (See Philippians 3:10-11).

20. And don't forget your pastor's wife. She makes many sacrifices too in giving up her husband to ministry opportunities. Send her notes of appreciation, flowers or a gift certificate. Express gratitude for the part she plays in the teamwork of pastoring your local church.

Why not take some time right now to consider how you can esteem your pastor? Then do it.
