A friend of mine recently shared how the church he is attending is doing a new series. One of the first sermons in the series was about "wasting" time (now that's not a sermon you hear every day!!).
The pastor's point was that many of the things we invest our time in are NOT His priorities. God makes it clear that "relationships" are His highest priority - first our relationship with Him and second our relationship with others. Jesus Himself said that loving God and loving your neighbor summed up the whole of the Bible. The pastor said that we should waste more time on the important things in our lives - our relationships!
And I was reminded of this just the other day as I watched two of our kids, Caleb and Sarah, playing outside. I was inside trying to get things done and my "to do" list accomplished while there were outside just swinging and having fun. They were enjoying the gift of the day...but was I?
The whole "wasting time" thing reminds me of the story of Martha and Mary in the Bible. Martha complained to Jesus that Mary should be helping her serve and work. But Jesus said Mary had chosen correctly -- spending time with Him. Sitting at His feet and just being with Him.
I hope this might be as convicting for you as it as for me. That I need to "waste" more time on the things that really matter. My wife. My kids. My Jesus. Oh that I would wake up and make my daily priorities His and that I would "waste" more time on the things that He says matter!!
